In this 1992 radio adaptation of his 1972 TV play, Don Taylor stages a Christmas dinner for four bourgeois Brits. The labourer’s cottage they occupy is newly renovated by Rachel and her husband Edmund, whose unionist father has told him: “Eddie, my son, it’s no way for a socialist to live.” Sinister and supernatural things occur, trapping and terrifying the four. In this excerpt Rachel (played by Susan Fleetwood) is filled by the starved dead: Through her mouth, Sarah Jane Mulby pants out an anguished account of the death of her and her family, on the same site hundreds of years ago. She asks: “How can this ground ever be easy while there is no atonement for crimes like these?”
