Crying about the Passing of Time

“Drink, o eyes, as much as your lashes can hold, / of the golden opulence of the world!”, from Gottfried Keller’s Evening Song (1879), describes the transience of appearances in melancholic awareness. In Sonja Engelhardt’s video, her eyelashes can no longer hold up against the passing of time. Robbed of its protective shield, the eye is left naked, exposed to the most painful invasions of the visible. (…) Executed laconically and free of context, the cutting off of eyelashes in Crying about the Passing of Time constitutes a deliberate, cool and calculated act, which makes it all the more unsettling.” (Matthias Müller)
