how to make a refugee

Camera: Phil Collins
“It’s better without… No, no, it’s good with the hat on,” the voices of photographers beckon a teenager, directly after asking him to expose the scars sustained on his lower abdomen. Filmed during the Kosovo War in May 1999, Collins’ first moving image work documents a photo shoot conducted by British journalists with a family of Kosovan-Albanian refugees in neighbouring Macedonia. The short film introduces the artist’s longstanding preoccupations with the reductive categorisation of people in conflict zones, and the ambivalent status of the camera in the production of images for political instrumentalisation and aesthetic consumption.
