In Rouge

Unsurprisingly, the focus of the film In Rouge lies once again on longing. Red lips, bright red painted fingernails and broken roses are shown with a haunting beauty that is at the same time solemn, yet deeply ironic, even outrageous. Formally, In Rouge is a response to feminist theories that locate gender difference in complex codes of colour perception and the fetishisation of certain objects. The melancholic music at the end of the film leaves no doubt that these images, these myths, are descriptions that have little to do with reality. These myths are further disturbed by the use of quotes from A Winter’s Tan, a film with its own very contradictory images of women. (Johannes Tritschler)
